Ochsner Health System in New Orleans, Louisiana, announces an exceptional opportunity for a nationally recognized surgeon to serve as Chair of the Department of Surgery for Ochsner Medical Center. Based at Ochsner Medical Center, the system’s 560-bed acute care hospital and flagship institution, the Chair of Surgery will provide strategic leadership, direction and coordination of clinical, administrative, education and research endeavors to the department’s 60 employed surgeons in the Divisions of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Transplantation, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, and General Surgery.
The Chair, Department of Surgery will advance clinical quality, safety and operational efficiency while cultivating a collegial and multidisciplinary team-based culture to ensure a high-functioning department. The Chair will provide mentorship and leadership to the department, with direct reporting responsibility for six Division Chiefs. The Chair will build the surgical expertise of Ochsner Medical Center and achieve a high-performing department through a commitment to evidence-based surgical care, process improvement and the development of a robust quality improvement program. The Department of Surgery at Ochsner Medical Center, first led by the organization’s founder and namesake Alton Ochsner, performs surgical cases at the flagship hospital, as well as five additional Ochsner-owned facilities throughout the New Orleans Metro area. The department maintains a residency program in general surgery and fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery and abdominal transplant surgery.

The Ochsner Clinical School, in partnership with the University of Queensland in Australia, enrolls 130 medical students each year.
The successful candidate for the Chair, Department of Surgery will be a respected surgeon with a track record of excellence in clinical care, research and teaching within a nationally recognized surgical program. This position requires excellent leadership and communication skills. Current board certification in General Surgery and/or a related surgical subspecialty area is required.
