Health System Goes Beyond It's Walls To Recruit A Star Physician Executive

This case study is an actual account of an Executive Search Division client engagement. Names have been changed to ensure the healthcare organizations' anonymity in today's highly competitive marketplace.

Situational Analysis

This prestigious upper-Midwest Health System, in a large market with major competitors, consists of a 500-physician MS Group and a 470-bed Acute care Hospital. The market dynamics include heavy managed care penetration, over 50% capitated revenues, and new PC satellites having difficulty developing patient base. The Group and the Hospital are both well respected with long standing reputations for high-quality care.

Challenge

The System had never had a Physician Executive from the outside and there were four internal candidates, one of whom was clearly favored by the CEO - the final decision maker in the selection process. They wanted to run a national search, but were clearly skeptical of any outside candidates presented. Fortunately the CEO was not home grown himself, and was willing to consider outside candidates.

Cejka/Consultant Approach/Methodology

Sourcing was primarily through Cejka's vast network of contacts. We also used our contacts at ACPE and AMGA, mainly contacting large group CEO, CMO, and Medical Directors. We extended the candidate pool by adding five outside and one local candidate. The local person was a former member of the group. After personally interviewing all candidates, we presented the final slate to the CEO. He selected two internal candidates, the local person, and only one of our outside candidates.

Outcomes

Despite their efforts to hire an internal candidate, the Cejka candidate proved to be the most qualified person for the job. The Cejka candidate was selected by unanimous vote (primarily the CEO). Both the staff and the CEO were extremely pleased with their new physician leader who has since gone on to be an extremely valuable leader of the group.
