Recruiting New Talent To A Group In An Era Of Change And Uncertainty

This case study is an actual account of an Executive Search Division client engagement. Names have been changed to ensure the healthcare organizations' anonymity in today's highly competitive marketplace.

Situational Analysis

This Executive Search Division client is a multi-specialty group practice of approximately 45-50 physicians. The Clinic is located approximately 45 minutes outside of Nashville, Tennessee, located in a bedroom community of approximately 30,000. The Clinic was then owned by a national PPMC, who initially hired Cejka to recruit a new Executive Director for the clinic.

Challenge

During the consultant's site visit, she discovered that the Clinic was extremely dissatisfied with their PPMC and was seriously contemplating disengaging from them. The Clinic was in active discussions with attorneys to determine the legality involved in dissolving the PPMC management contract. We questioned the physicians of the Clinic to determine if their ultimate goal was to hire an Executive Director. The next step was to determine the hiring process. The candidates would then be presented but the actual hiring and employment of the candidate would be contingent on the ownership of the Clinic at that time. A contact was then established with the President of the Clinic, as well as with a key contact from the PPMC. Communication was delivered simultaneously to both parties throughout the search process.

Cejka/Consultant Approach/Methodology

One of the significant challenges was to present the situation accurately to potential candidates. We were able to convince the physicians to focus on the most positive aspects of the Clinic. We were instrumental in establishing the on-site interview itinerary to handle political issues and key personalities within the group.

Outcomes

The physicians at the Clinic were successful in recruiting their number one choice. The physicians were open to Cejka's recommendation to bond with the candidates and make sure the candidates felt a firm commitment by the clinic to hire an Executive Director. Instead of focusing on all the turmoil, they focused on the future and what they wanted to accomplish.
