Family Medicine Jobs
Approximately 90% of the health care that people receive throughout their lives is provided by family medicine doctors, reports the American Academy of Family Physicians. These family medicine jobs - providing care for the entire family - are the foundation of our healthcare system. As our population ages, while the number of family practice graduates declines, the demand for people in primary care careers and careers for physicians is greater than ever.
The shortage of family medicine physicians bodes well for new and seasoned doctors alike. Increasing pay and more control over workplace and schedules are just a few of the benefits a career in family practice provides. In a sense, many family medicine doctors are able to call their own shots.
Options for Primary Care Careers
"Options on where to practice and who to practice with are numerous," explains Cheryl De Vita, a senior consultant with Cejka Search, a nationally recognized healthcare executive and physician recruitment firm based in St. Louis. "And this makes finding the correct fit easier. Obviously, primary care doctors, like all physicians, remain busy, but lifestyle and satisfaction with their work continues to improve."
Primary care careers are available in a number of different settings - from group practices, partnerships and multi-specialty groups to hospital settings and more. Many family physicians provide care in a combination of settings or even choose to work part-time. Some key concerns when looking for a position or choosing a practice setting include call ratios, whether obstetrics (OB) services are offered and if they provide in patient care or pediatric jobs.
Pediatric Jobs in This Framework
Residency training for family medicine physicians is three years. It includes a broad range of training, including internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and for geriatric and pediatric jobs. Family medicine physicians can be certified in a geriatric medicine or sports medicine subspecialty with an additional year of training.
